When I work with a new client, we will usually have a consultation as our first session together. This takes about an hour and is an opportunity for us to meet over Zoom and simply try some things. I get to learn a bit about the issues at play, and what sort of approaches you’re likely to respond to, and you get the opportunity to see how I work, and the sorts of things I do.

At the end of the consultation, we can both make an informed decision about what happens next.

The aim of the consultation is not necessarily to achieve anything, however, if I can give you some simple tips for managing things, or nudge you in the right direction, then I will – if I see a thorn I’m going to pull it out!

At the end of the session, we will look at whether booking another session is appropriate, and we can plan the timing of any further sessions, considering if we need to plan around test dates or other factors that may affect things.

When a consultation is not appropriate…

From time to time someone calls me very close to their test date. They thought they were going to be fine, but now they are panicking. In these instances, we will do away with the consultation and just jump straight in and do what we can do.

I often get good results with these clients too, but it’s not my preferred way to work, and it’s definitely advisable to allow enough time for a consultation and a few well-planned sessions. This gives us the opportunity to try things, test them out in the real world without pressure, and adjust what we are working on as we learn more about how effective the work we are doing is.
